Soccer Athletes Value Education (S.A.V.E.) was started by Kensington Soccer Club to encourage all our members to read for academic success and for enjoyment.
Many students in the city of Philadelphia struggle to improve their reading skills. Many more can read at their grade level, but do not have access to books which they enjoy reading. S.A.V.E. steps up to provide free books at all levels, from picture books to novels, fiction and nonfiction. We offer books that children in our communities can relate to. Our volunteers have tables of books on the soccer field, at practices, tournaments, summer camps, afterschool programs, and Family Days.
S.A.V.E. partners with literacy organizations such as Philadelphia Free Library’s Read By 4th, Diverse Books Committee, BookSmiles, and Tree House Books. S.A.V.E. put more than 5,000 books in children's hands during the 2025-26 school year.
Dr. Tony Watlington, Superintendent, SDP, August 27, 2026
“…We're going to make sure that our teachers are prepared to teach the science of reading.
We're going to do what we need to do to encourage our kids to do more reading. We want to get our kids reading books from cover to cover, because our kids aren't reading enough. We want to make sure that we're giving our children access to reading materials that they're highly interested in.”
