ABOUT:

Soccer Athletes Value Education (S.A.V.E.) is KSC’s literacy program.

KSC is dedicated to encouraging all our athletes to achieve and excel academically as well as athletically.

Literacy correlates with school success. The School District of Philadelphia is trying to restore school libraries after funding was cut over a decade ago. Since many students still do not have easy access to good books through schools, S.A.V.E. gives away books to children and teens on KSC teams and in KSC after-school (OST) programs. In the 2023-2024 school year, KSC S.A.V.E. gave away 4,806 books.

S.A.V.E. volunteers obtain high-interest books on every reading level, from beginner readers to novels, to match our age range of 3-year-olds to young adults. Children have opportunities to select books that they can read independently or can learn to read. They find books with characters who look like them, characters they can relate to, and issues that are meaningful to them. The books reflect many cultures and traditions. Spanish language and bilingual books are very popular with families.

Events where books are distributed:

  • Family Day Celebrations

This program is supported by partnerships with organizations that provide quality books that our athletes can see themselves in. BookSmiles in New Jersey and FirstBook provide the majority of books so students who attend our programs and events can choose as many books as they want.
