As someone who researches sociology of families, it is important to gear our communications towards incorporating and representing the incredible families who register their children for and support our programs.

Gabrielle L. Peterson is the Communications Director at Kensington Soccer Club. As Communications Director she is responsible for newsletters, social media, media relations, and our website. Gabrielle started as an Americorps VISTA under our Up2Us partnership, and extended her contract into early 2024.

Gabrielle’s most immediate experience prior to her work at Kensington Soccer Club was in academia, where she planned research symposia and oversaw the marketing campaigns for keynote speakers like Eduardo Bonilla-Silva and Nikole Hannah-Jones among other scholars at varying stages of their careers. Additionally through her work with research centers on coordinating workshops, and assisting with planning and setting up internal systems of communication among participants. In addition to managing social media accounts and leveraging communication to solidify partnerships with scholars and research centers, Gabrielle honed her skills of research management, teaching, presenting, and editing through her collaborations within and outside of University of Michigan. As a Doctoral Candidate she received awards for her Teaching by the Department of Sociology, her Social Engagement by the School for Social Work, and she was awarded thousands of dollars in research funding for local and international projects.

Overall, Gabrielle brings her experience from the professional world and her volunteerism to lead the Communications Efforts at Kensington Soccer Club. Her professional experience as a Church Secretary at Grace Presbyterian Church, and a Small Business Owner exposed her to newsletter development and website management needed for this role. As such, she was able to not only continue the circulation of the monthly voices newsletter, but also add another weekly “Kensington Soccer News” into the rotation to better publicize opportunities for the community to get involved. Her website updates include a new landing page for registration, more comprehensive program pages, professional staff pages, and other efforts that contribute to the user experience for athletes and families. Her time as the Press & Publicity Chair for the Montclair NAACP Youth Council also helped her leverage relationships with the press to further amplify the work we do in the community and the accomplishments of our athletes. Further affiliations with the Cancer Support Community, and Dress for Success have also proved foundational to the work engaging with different stakeholders and highlighting the way we unify our community through soccer.
